An excellent comment on the Irish Independent site.
“As someone who remembers the last anti-water charges campaign very well, all I can say is they are very naive to think that 90 % will pay up, ( they left off water charges in Dublin until last in 1994 each year more and more people refused to pay the water charges until they were abolished in 1996. There was a lot less houses back then. They are playing down the numbers liable for water charges. They say they plan to write to 1.3 million households. The last census showed there are slightly over 2 million households in the State the real number of households liable. I notice two threats in this article (1) they are likely to have the unpaid bill registered as a charge against their property. The last time an unpaid water charge bill could only apply as a registered charge against a property was a period of 7 years under the statute of limitations. A registered charge against someone’s property will not apply forever; (2) or experience a loss of water pressure. I expected they would use threats to limit someone’s supply of water, they did this last time. Any time the water was turned off on a non-payer, it was turned back on soon afterwards by campaign volunteers. The same will happen again. One Incident during the last anti-water charges campaign: a private water crew tried to turn off residents water supply in Waterford. Their van was surrounded by angry mobs of people and they were trapped for hours. The only real purpose in setting up Irish Water is to pave the way for the eventual privatisation of water - a bonanza to be handed over to a private operator to profiteer from a vital resource. Otherwise, the government would leave water in control of local authorities.”
