It has been noted with interest that Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly was seen leaving Marie Stopes abortuary in Victoria St. Belfast last Thursday afternoon. I wonder was his visit concerning a termination or a payout for much needed political support for the baby butchers to continue their bloody trade. What is certain is that  Caitríona Ruane did come out publicly in support of Marie Stopes the following day. Coincidence, who knows????

Sinn Fein says it opposes an amendment coming before the Northern Ireland Assembly that will stop Marie Stopes International from killing unborn children in Northern Ireland. The Director of Marie Stopes in Belfast - Dawn Purvis - has admitted they would perform surgical abortions up to 24 weeks and beyond.
The aim of the amendment in the Assembly is to strengthen the laws protecting our unborn babies.
But Caitriona Ruane from Sinn Fein said the move by the DUP's Paul Givan and the SDLP's Alban Maginness was an attempt to restrict a so-called 'right to abortion'.
When Marie Stopes opened in Belfast last October, the Sinn Fein Deputy Leader Martin McGuinness said "Well it's a private institution…that is setting itself up as…a competitor to what's happening within the health service."
By opposing this amendment, Sinn Fein are committing "political suicide". Against the views of the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland, Sinn Fein are now supporting Marie Stopes International - a private institution which exploits vulnerable women by charging them up to £1900 to kill their unborn babies.
The amendment to the criminal justice bill will be debated and voted on in the NI Assembly next Tuesday.

Outspoken disability campaigner Joanne O’Riordan has accused Taoiseach Enda Kenny of again backtracking on “his personal promise to me” that disability funding would not be cut under his rule.

Joanne, who was born with no limbs, addressed a UN technology conference in New York last year and won a string of awards for her campaigning. She said she was disgusted that “Enda Kenny looked me in the eye before the general election and promised me one thing and then once again, did another”.
Meanwhile, Kathleen Lynch, the minister with responsibility for disability issues, said she could not guarantee that those currently in receipt of the mobility allowance will be entitled to the same transport provisions when their payment stops in four months’ time.

Earlier this week, the Government decided to scrap the mobility allowance and the motorised transport grant, paid to approximately 5,000 people with disabilities. The full grant is worth €208.50 per month.

Ms Lynch said: “The people in receipt of this allowance, they use it for taxis, they use it for public transport, they use it for a range of issues... So to say that you could guarantee that they would have the same service in four months’ time as they have now, you can’t do that. What we are going to do is look at what their needs are and to ensure that those needs are met.”

Joanne’s mother Ann said she could not believe “the minister had the cheek to say she was agonising and agonising” over removing the mobility grant.
“Agonise? She doesn’t have to agonise any night. She can get into bed herself and get out of bed herself. She doesn’t need somebody to look after her the way we have to look after our children with special needs. We’re on call with the car for Joanne 24/7. I don’t go outside the door. I haven’t been outside the door since Joanne was born. I’m there for Joanne 24/7. I’m not complaining. I’d do it all over again, but don’t talk to me about agonising,” she said.

Meanwhile, an Oireachtas committee has requested the Department of Health’s top civil servant appear before it, following the axing of the mobility allowance and grant.
In a letter, the committee members said they were “increasingly concerned at the difficulties in the relationship between the ombudsman and the Department of Health”.

The chairman of the joint Oireachtas committee on public service oversight and petitions, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, said the Department of Health “is constantly failing to learn from past mistakes” and requested Dr Ambrose McLoughlin to attend the committee next week.
“The mobility grant scheme is not the first scheme that the department has failed to roll out properly. It just can’t seem to get the design of schemes correct,” said Mr Mac Lochlainn.

The department blamed the axing of the two schemes on the burden it would put on the exchequer if they were to operate in accordance with Equal Status Acts.
The department had been repeatedly warned by Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly that by putting an upper age limit of 65 years on the schemes, they were in contravention of the legislation. Ms O’Reilly also recommended that the definition of disability under the schemes be broadened.

PEOPLE will be able to pay their property tax at their local post office – in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the household charge fiasco.

The local authorities did not use the country's 1,100-plus post offices last year to collect the €100 charge – which has still not been paid by around 470,000 households 14 months later. But the Revenue has been given responsibility for the property tax and has now awarded a contract to An Post to allow people to pay it at their local post office.

Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte confirmed the new contract during a Dail discussion about the future of the post office network.

"That will help the Revenue position of An Post and it is the kind of new service it can provide better than anybody else, with a network of 1,138 offices throughout the country," he said.

TDs had previously criticised the failure to use post offices to collect the household charge, given it was convenient for elderly people and those collecting social welfare payments.

It is a sign of the Revenue's determination to use every possible option to collect the property tax.

It has the power to deduct it from the wages and social welfare payments of those who refuse to pay, as well as the ability to take it out of people's bank accounts.

An Post has also got the contract to deliver the Revenue letters to households next month which will contain estimates of how much property tax they have to pay.

In the Dail, Mr Rabbitte could not resist a jibe at Independent TD Mick Wallace, who had brought up the threat to the future of Duncormick post office in his Wexford constituency.

"I am sorry that although I gave the deputy the opportunity to break the news about the collection of the property tax, he did not rise to his feet to welcome it," Mr Rabbitte said.

Mr Wallace is one of several opposition TDs who has not paid the €100 household charge and has been calling on the public to boycott it.

A spokeswoman for An Post confirmed that the company had been awarded the contract by the Revenue to collect the property tax at its post offices.

"We are very much looking forward to playing a key role. We are best placed, with a unique network of over 1,100 post offices and 1.7 million people visiting a post office every week," she said.

TRANSPORT Minister Leo Varadkar has defended the Government's spend of €70,000 on fine wines to replenish the cellars of the Department of Foreign Affairs

Just one day after taking the monthly €200 mobility allowance from disabled people, it emerged that the Government had bought €77,000 worth of vino, including 24 bottles of Chateau Lynch Bages at a princely €79 a bottle.

The department said it needed to replenish stocks ahead of the EU Presidency after VIP visits by Queen Elizabeth and President Obama.

Mr Varadkar said "the Government needs to be very sensitive about what we do and how we spend money". But he added: "At the same time, the European Presidency is a real opportunity for Ireland.

"It is important we treat visiting delegates in a way we would expect to be treated, particularly if we want them to make concessions to Ireland that are worth billions of euros."
